Family Worship Guides: How We Use Them
Welcome to A Mother’s Thinking Love: Living Ideas, Lovingly Shared! As a homeschool mom, I longed for a simple way to begin our day in worship together as a family. We have used several books and resources over the years, but, in today’s post, I’ll share how we use the guides I put together. I’ll share the thought behind the guides, what’s included, and how we use them. Join me for: Family Worship Guides: How We Use Them.

Why I Make our Family Worship Guides
After using outside resources for several years, I decided to begin making our own resources for our morning Family Worship time. I longed for simple, easy-to-use guides. In past years, I had to pull Scriptures, songs and hymns, prayers, and picture study from several resources. But with these monthly guides, I include the text from the Bible, instead of the reference to the verses, links and QR codes to songs and hymns, paintings for picture study, song lyrics, and more. Everything we use is included in one place. I print a copy for our binder, and I make a link on my phone home screen for reference. Now, I offer the guides in a free, PDF form, so you can do the same!

Why Not Bible Study Alone?
Additionally, we do Bible reading and study. We are always reading and studying from both the Old and New Testaments. The guides are meant to support Bible study. I try to be cautious to not approach Bible study as merely gaining head knowledge. We risk falling into this habit as Christians in every age and stage. My desire is that the Family Worship Guides serve as a reminder to worship.
How We Use the Family Worship Guides
At this time, we use the Family Worship Guides four days each week. We begin our day with the guides on each of the four days. It is the same routine each of the four days, with an exception for picture study. We use the guides year-round. It’s a precious habit to build to begin each day in worship.
Our Routine
- Read, or sing, the Psalm – We read the Psalm together.
- Read, or sing, the Praise/Doxology – We usually alternate who reads each day, and sometimes we read them together.
- Choose & read a passage from Holy Scripture – Again, we usually alternate who reads each day, and sometimes we read them together.
- Prayer – We each offer up a praise and a request. Then, we recite The Lord’s Prayer together.
- Benediction – I usually read this.
- Songs & Hymns – Sometimes we begin our time with the song or hymn and sometimes we end with it. It just depends on the day.
- *Twice a month, we use picture study methods similar to the ones outline by Simply Charlotte Mason. After we study the pictures, we may display them in the house or put them in the cover of our Family Worship Guide binder.
We usually spend 15-20 minutes with the Family Worship Guides on the days we use them. The goal is to simply use this time to fulfill Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” While we use the guides in the mornings, you can use them any time of day!
